Serge Gnabry has remained confident in his return to Bayern Munich, despite a challenging season and has regained his place on the team under Vincent Kompany. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich is reportedly eyeing 24-year-old Canadian striker Jonathan David, who is also a target for Barcelona. With both clubs having aging star strikers—Harry Kane at Bayern and Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona—David could be a viable medium-term solution for their forward lines.
Gnabry Never Questioned His Bayern Munich Return
Bayern Munich and Germany forward Serge Gnabry faced one of the toughest seasons of his career in 2023/24. Injuries limited his chances to feature, resulting in only 10 Bundesliga appearances, with just five of those being starts. As a result, he found himself out of contention for a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s EURO 2024 squad.
However, Gnabry maintained his self-belief and fought his way back into the revamped Bayern squad, now under the leadership of Vincent Kompany.
“Last year felt like a lost year,” the 29-year-old winger explained in an interview with club magazine Säbener 51 (as captured by @iMia San Mia). “Of course, I had hoped to play a lot, to make a big impact at Bayern and with the national team. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. At first, the disappointment is huge, but then it’s all about willpower and work ethic. There are better things than rehab training when you can see the lads out on the pitch playing every day. That also hurts sometimes. And whenever I came back, whenever things had just started to go well again, there was always the next setback. It was a totally negative streak. But I fought through it, time and time again.
“I’ve never had any self-doubt. I’ve always done everything I could to get fit. But there are also things that you can’t control 100%.”
No longer the forgotten player, Gnabry is now a consistent starter in Kompany’s Bayern lineup. Among the squad’s experienced wingers, including Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman, he seems to have the most secure spot.
Bayern Munich Now Eyeing 24-Year-Old Barcelona Target
FC Barcelona stays vigilant to market opportunities, especially given their unstable financial situation. While the club tends to be more cautious with purchases, they have still managed to secure some solid deals in recent times.
There are discussions suggesting that the club may explore potential future replacements for Robert Lewandowski. Despite his current excellent form, the Polish star is aging, and Barcelona will eventually need to find a successor for him.
Although there are several names being considered for this role, the most viable market option seems to be 24-year-old Canadian striker Jonathan David. Playing for French club Lille, his contract with the Ligue 1 team ends next year.
With an in-form player set to be a free agent in the summer of 2025, FC Barcelona and other clubs are closely monitoring his situation. However, according to Mundo Deportivo, German powerhouse Bayern Munich is also reportedly keen on signing the Ligue 1 forward.
Jonathan David has netted 13 goals and registered 2 assists in 19 games so far this season. His impressive stats speak for themselves, and his role in handing Real Madrid their first defeat further this season in the UEFA Champions League adds to his list of accomplishments.
Both Bayern Munich and Barcelona find themselves with elite strikers who are aging and in need of a medium-term solution like the Canadian forward. At 31, Harry Kane continues to perform for Bayern, while Robert Lewandowski remains a key contributor for Barcelona.
