With 18 goal contributions, he leads the division, and no other Bundesliga player has been involved in a larger share of their team’s goals than Frankfurt’s No. 11 (69 percent). Simply put, he’s in the form of his career, propelling the Hessen side to an impressive third place in the German top tier.
The praise has been relentless, and rightly so, but his recent goal against VfB Stuttgart showcased a standout skill. From a distance of 30 yards, Marmoush bent a free-kick over the Swabian wall and past Alexander Nübel with perfect precision.
It wasn’t a one-time occurrence. Against Slavia Prague, the 25-year-old scored another set piece, hitting the crossbar from a slightly shorter range. This followed his signature strike in the 7-2 thrashing of VfL Bochum on Matchday 9 of the Bundesliga.
Three matches, three free-kick goals— a feat only one player in Germany had matched before Christian Fuchs, who accomplished it for Bochum in the 2009/10 season. Outside of Germany, Lionel Messi achieved the same in both 2016/17 and 2017/18, as did Alessandro Del Piero in 2008/09. Marmoush is in some impressive company.
His most recent free-kick goal was his third in the Bundesliga, following a previous strike for Stuttgart against Augsburg in March 2022. Only Maximilian Arnold (10), Vincenzo Grifo (7), and Andrej Kramarić (6) have scored more frequently from free-kicks among active players in the German top flight, with each of them having made significantly more appearances than Frankfurt’s standout player.
After his performance in Europe, Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmöller was quick to commend his star forward, stating, ‘I don’t think I have seen a better free-kick. It was simply a perfect free-kick. There was no room for a sheet of paper in between the post and the ball.”
However, Toppmöller also implied that Marmoush doesn’t spend excessive time focusing on that aspect of his game, adding, “Omar practices them every now and then after training, on his own or together with others. Anyone who has ever played knows how much fun it is to take free kicks.”
Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche, on the other hand, feels that the player’s overall excellent finishing ability is a key factor in his current form. “Omar has a great shooting technique. This comes from intense training and the confidence he has gained. He’s also found his rhythm.”
“He wasn’t playing regularly at Wolfsburg. Then he came to us and played practically 90 minutes every game. That mixture of rhythm and playing time is very important. I have to pinch myself and say that things are going really well for Omar at the moment.”
No matter how much training precision demands, Marmoush shines in all dead-ball situations. Frankfurt currently tops the Bundesliga for set-piece goals this season with seven, all of which have seen contributions from the former St. Pauli player. He has recorded three assists from corners, scored two penalties, and netted two standout goals.
The two-week break will briefly halt his momentum, but Werder Bremen will surely be cautious not to allow Marmoush the opportunity to surpass the legendary Messi in Frankfurt’s next match.
By then, he could very well have added another free-kick goal to his growing collection. Marmoush has been named in the Egypt squad for the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualification matches against Cape Verde and Botswana, providing him with further opportunities to showcase his impressive set-piece skills on the international stage. His current form and consistency make it likely that he will continue to deliver, whether for club or country.
At this point, the sky truly seems to be the limit for Marmoush. With each match, he’s pushing the boundaries of his talent and setting new records. It’s difficult to imagine him not continuing to make history in the coming weeks and months, and his relentless drive suggests even more remarkable achievements are on the horizon.
