Pascal Gross has joined Borussia Dortmund from Brighton and Hove Albion. The German midfielder is returning to his home country after a successful period as an important player with Brighton. His transfer aims to boost Dortmund’s midfield with his experience.
The German midfielder joins Nuri Sahin’s squad for around £6 million, signing a two-year deal that will keep him at Borussia Dortmund until 2026.
The 33-year-old, included in Julian Nagelsmann’s Euro 2024 squad, played only half of the team’s campaign. Spain eliminated them in the quarter-finals after extra time.
Last season, he played 36 Premier League matches for Brighton under Roberto de Zerbi. During this time, he scored four goals and recorded three assists, contributing significantly to his team’s performance.
Gross arrived at Brighton in 2017 from Ingolstadt for an estimated £3 million. Over his tenure with the East Sussex club, he played 261 matches, netting 32 goals and delivering 52 assists.
He was honored as the fans’ Player of the Season on two occasions, specifically for the 2017-18 and 2023-24 seasons. This recognition highlights his consistent excellence and popularity among supporters, reflecting his significant impact on the team during these years.
During his tenure at the Amex Stadium, he showcased remarkable versatility by playing in multiple positions. He seamlessly filled roles in central midfield, where he orchestrated play and controlled the tempo of the game. Additionally, he adapted to playing out wide, providing support in attack and stretching the opposition’s defense.
Moreover, he was also called upon to play at full-back when needed, contributing defensively and supporting the team in a variety of situations. His ability to perform effectively in these different roles made him an indispensable asset to the team, highlighting his flexibility and value to the squad.
Borussia Dortmund’s managing director, Lars Ricken, told the club’s website: “Pascal has developed into an absolute top performer in recent years. He will make us more stable and flexible, help us with his experience, and have a very positive influence as a leader. We are very pleased that he has been a BVB fan for many years and has clearly committed to our club at an early stage.”
Sebastian Kehl, BVB’s sports director, said: “We are very happy that we can bring Pascal back to the Bundesliga. With his calmness on the ball, his outstanding passing and positioning, and his versatility, he gives our team new facets. But Pascal is also a sly fox and radiates direct and indirect goal threats in many areas. We are convinced that he will enrich our game and strengthen us with his will to win and his personality.”
Gross also commented: “I’m really looking forward to BVB.”
“For me, this move is simply a huge thing because I’ve been a Dortmund fan since I was a little boy. I will try to repay the club’s trust with my style, and I can’t wait to play in front of the BVB fans at the Signal Iduna Park with my new teammates and to work together with everyone to ensure that we achieve our big goals.”
He was the first player to join the team under Nuri Sahin’s management. Sahin, a former Dortmund and Real Madrid midfielder, took over the managerial role following Edin Terzic’s departure. This signing marked the beginning of Sahin’s tenure with the team.
