Chelsea has secured João Félix from Atlético Madrid on a seven-year contract, marking a significant addition to their squad. Félix, who previously impressed during a loan spell at Chelsea and Barcelona, is expected to bring valuable versatility to the team. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old is reportedly open to accepting a pay cut for a potential transfer, with Juventus and a top Premier League club showing interest. The situation highlights the dynamic nature of the transfer market as Chelsea aims to fine-tune their squad. As the transfer window nears its end, it remains to be seen how these developments will unfold.
Chelsea secures João Félix from Atlético Madrid on a seven-year deal
On Wednesday, Chelsea announced the signing of Portuguese forward João Félix from Atlético Madrid on a seven-year contract.
The financial specifics weren’t revealed, but British media reports suggest Chelsea paid approximately £46 million (R1.07 billion) to bring the 24-year-old back to Stamford Bridge.
Félix made a notable impact during his six-month loan at Chelsea in the 2022-23 season, netting four goals in 20 matches. Last season, he was on loan at Barcelona, scoring ten goals in 44 appearances.
Atlético Madrid acquired Félix from Benfica in 2019 for a record €126 million. He scored 34 goals in 131 appearances and played a key role in their 2021 La Liga title win.
“It’s a chance for me to find a home,” Felix told Chelsea’s website.
“After two loans, Chelsea and Barca, I needed to stay permanently in one place. There’s no better place for me to be than Chelsea. I see a perfect place to shine.”
“I felt really good when I was here despite the results we had. I’m really happy to be back,” he added.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca emphasized the significance of Félix’s versatility.
“The good thing about Joao is that he can play in different positions. He can play inside, he can play as a [number] nine, he can play outside,” Maresca said.
On Thursday, Chelsea faces Swiss team Servette in the Europa Conference League playoff stage, followed by a Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
Chelsea player willing to accept a pay cut for transfer, with Juventus and a top Premier League club interested
It’s uncertain where Raheem Sterling might land, but Juventus and Aston Villa appear to be the leading contenders. However, according to Ben Jacobs in his column for Give Me Sport, the situation still seems preliminary.
The report indicates that Sterling has been proposed to Aston Villa. At the same time, Juventus is interested but has yet to initiate discussions about a possible deal. We’ll need to see if this changes in the closing days of the transfer window.
Sterling is unlikely to stay at Chelsea. He was not included in Enzo Maresca’s squad for the season opener, and the Chelsea manager confirmed today that Sterling does not fit into his plans.
Sterling still has the potential to make an impact at several top clubs. However, given his age and recent decline in form, he might also be considered a risky investment.
Chelsea fans never fully witnessed Sterling’s best performances, despite his status as a standout player at Manchester City and his emergence as an exciting young talent at Liverpool.
Chelsea needs to address this situation, as Maresca has a large squad and will likely want to reduce it before next week’s transfer deadline.
It could be better for the Italian manager to juggle so many players, especially with big names like Sterling, who will likely become dissatisfied and end up in a difficult situation.
