Chelsea is poised to secure a top player before the transfer deadline, but its ongoing turmoil could benefit rivals like Tottenham, Newcastle, and Manchester United. As the transfer window nears its close, Chelsea’s upheaval presents opportunities for these clubs to capitalize on any potential fallout.
Chelsea Could Land One of the World’s Top Players Before Deadline Day
The Blues have spent £161m on nine signings so far, yet they still lack depth in the number nine position.
Despite an impressive debut season following his £32m move from Villarreal last summer, Nicolas Jackson isn’t yet at the level needed to elevate Chelsea to the next stage.
It’s believed that Enzo Maresca is eager to sign a top-tier striker before the August 30 deadline.
There’s still a belief that Chelsea might sign Victor Osimhen
In an exclusive interview with TBR Football, journalist Graeme Bailey updated readers on Victor Osimhen’s future at Napoli amid rumors linking him to Stamford Bridge.
“So on Osimhen, PSG are not in the mix,” Bailey said.
“I’m told that Luis Enrique is not that keen on him and never was. Ademola Lookman is emerging as a possible target for PSG.”
Bailey also revealed that Chelsea remains in discussions with Napoli, noting, “The situation between the two clubs is slow but ongoing.”
“Napoli have seemingly agreed to lower their asking price for him, but so too have Chelsea for Lukaku.”
“Expectation is that once the Lukaku deal is done – which should be soon – that does make the Osimhen deal much more likely.”
Victor Osimhen’s stats
According to Adriano Del Monte, in recent years, Osimhen has solidified his status as one of the world’s top players.
Despite a season plagued by injuries, the Nigerian international scored 17 goals in 27 starts last term, a commendable achievement.
This came after a remarkable 31-goal season the year before, indicating that the 25-year-old would be a significant upgrade over Jackson.
If Chelsea finalizes the deal, it would be considered one of the biggest transfers of the window.
However, Arsenal is also interested in Osimhen, meaning Chelsea will face competition for his signature.
Tottenham, Newcastle, and Man Utd Could Benefit from Chelsea’s Turmoil Before Transfer Window Closes
Chelsea’s urgency to offload players before the summer transfer deadline could work to their rivals’ advantage. Several notable absences from Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Premier League opening match on Sunday, which saw Manchester City secure a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, highlight this situation.
Conor Gallagher was left out of the 20-man squad despite featuring in nearly every league match last season and frequently captaining the team. The 24-year-old was poised to move to Atletico Madrid. Still, the deal’s collapse, which would have sent Samu Omorodion the other way, has cast uncertainty over Gallagher’s future.
Chelsea and Atletico are negotiating a move for Joao Felix, which could revive Gallagher’s potential transfer to Spain. However, Tottenham might be the first to seize the opportunity if that deal doesn’t go through.
Reports suggest that Ange Postecoglou has long been a fan of Gallagher. The Spurs manager hopes to use the England international in midfield, playing behind new signing Dominic Solanke.
Another notable player who was left out against City is Ben Chilwell. With Marc Cucurella poised to thrive in Maresca’s system and Renato Veiga offering additional support, Chilwell may be sidelined.
Maresca has openly stated that it would benefit everyone if Chilwell could secure a move to a new club this summer. Manchester United reportedly considered the 27-year-old before signing Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
Given Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s injuries-related struggles, it’s uncertain whether United might find Chilwell’s availability too enticing to ignore.
Of the five substitutes who didn’t play against City, Noni Madueke is likely the most baffled. The 22-year-old winger had a strong finish to last season and was one of Maresca’s standout performers during pre-season.
