Guardiola and Arteta have shared their thoughts on the latest developments in the Premier League title race after Liverpool’s recent victory, which has shifted the competition to the top. Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has stirred up transfer speculation, claiming that while Salah and Van Dijk are likely to stay at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold could be a target for Real Madrid.
Guardiola and Arteta React to Title Race Twist After Liverpool Win
Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta have shared their thoughts on their Premier League title ambitions after recent setbacks, which allowed Liverpool to rise to the top. The Reds secured a vital 2-1 win over Brighton, with second-half goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah lifting them to first place in the league.
Brighton’s defeat to Liverpool, along with Arsenal’s loss to Newcastle and Manchester City’s slip-up, gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a two-point lead at the top after 10 matches.
Arsenal’s setback was a close 1-0 loss to Newcastle, leaving them four points behind Liverpool before the Reds faced Brighton, deepening Arsenal’s frustration. The Gunners now trail by seven points and could drop to sixth place depending on Sunday’s results involving Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Following the defeat at St. James’ Park and with a significant gap to Liverpool, Arteta was asked about the impact on the title race.
“I understand it, but after eight, nine or 10 games last year, we didn’t [talk about it], and we won’t talk about it now,” Arteta declared to the press.
“It’s about how you react to that. We’re not going to find the right words or answers to describe how we feel, so we have to put it on that field on Wednesday night against Inter [Milan].”
The race for Premier League glory is heating up, with each match holding the potential to shift the intense competition for England’s top spot.
City endured a surprising 2-1 loss at Bournemouth on Saturday, with Josko Gvardiol’s late goal serving as little more than a consolation after goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanlison. Liverpool now leads City by two points after 10 matches, as both teams gear up for their last fixtures before the November international break.
Guardiola reflected on the defeat to Bournemouth and shared his thoughts on City’s strategy for recovering in the title race. “Sometimes we have to accept that the opponents make a type of game,” the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss said.
“Sometimes you handle it, and sometimes you struggle a little bit. Today [Saturday], it [the struggle] happened. [The players] make an incredible effort. They are players that are not in the best way and they made an incredible effort to be here.”
“Manu [Akanji] and Nathan [Ake] were not in a good condition. Until the last moment, I didn’t know Nathan could play, he said I want to try [despite injury]. During the season, sometimes this kind of thing happens more than during other seasons… We have to handle it. People will come back, and sooner or later, the team will be back.”
Carragher Makes Transfer Claim About Liverpool Star
It was the perfect matchday, with Arsenal and City losing to Newcastle and Bournemouth.
Arne Slot’s side went two points clear, with Gakpo and Salah leading the win over Brighton.
The focus will soon turn to the contract situations of Liverpool players facing uncertain futures at the club.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil The last year of each van Dijk’s contract has begun at the club and speculation about their future is growing with every passing week.
Football pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Salah and Van Dijk will stay at the club, but Alexander-Arnold could move to Real Madrid, which is interested in signing him.
Carragher stated, according to the BBC and reported by The Mirror:
“I’m pretty confident that the two older lads [Virgil Van Dijk and Mohammed Salah] will sign. They’re at a stage where it’s difficult to move on to a better club than Liverpool.
“When I played, the two only clubs where players would want to move on to were the Spanish giants, but I don’t really see that now for Virgil and Mo – who will be desperate to break as many records as he can.
“Trent is in a different situation, so that’s the one most people will be worried about with the interest from Real Madrid and the fact that Dani Carvajal has done his ACL.”
