According to reports from Spain, Manchester United is interested in Aston Villa center-back Pau Torres.
Over the weekend, The Peoples Person reported that United failed to secure Villa star Jhon Durán despite closely monitoring the Colombian striker while he played in the MLS for the Chicago Fire.
Likewise, it was previously reported that the Red Devils were interested in Torres before his transfer to the Birmingham club from Villarreal in 2023.
He also put in a strong performance and assisted his team in maintaining a clean sheet against the Mancunian giants during their goalless draw over the weekend.
As reported by Fichajes, Torres has caught the attention of United, which is said to be prepared to offer around €50 million to sign the Villa star for Old Trafford.
Fichajes reports that Torres has attracted interest from United, who are reportedly ready to offer approximately €50 million to bring the Villa star to Old Trafford.
Even with his successful time under Emery in England, the chance to join a club of United’s caliber would be seen as a significant advancement in the career of Spain international.
It is suggested that Villa would also be open to a sale for around €50 million, as this would allow them to make additions to bolster Emery’s project at Villa Park.
During the summer, United once again invested significantly in central defenders, bringing in Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt. The former is currently sidelined due to injury, while the latter was left on the bench against Villa as Ten Hag unexpectedly chose to trust Jonny Evans.
Evans was awarded Man of the Match for his outstanding performance, but at 36 years old, he cannot be considered a long-term solution.
Given this, it wouldn’t be surprising if United finds themselves looking for a new center-back again in the near future.
Why Harry Maguire is Missing England’s October Games
The Manchester United center-back was a key player for Gareth Southgate during his time as manager of the Three Lions.
The 31-year-old has earned 64 caps for his country, but he won’t be increasing that number as England faces Greece and Finland in the Nations League.
Instead, he will be at home watching his teammates on TV.
Why isn’t Harry Maguire playing for England?
Lee Carsley did not select Maguire for this round of Nations League matches.
The interim Three Lions manager opted for different choices, leaving Maguire out of the picture.
He was included in the previous squad and played 85 minutes in the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland.
Maguire was an unused substitute in the subsequent match against Finland at Wembley and has been completely excluded from the squad this time.
After announcing his squad, Carsley commented on the decision: “It was a chance of having a look at other players. It’s nothing to do with form. It’s looking at the next two camps to look at other players.
“The players left out all have a case, but we saw the benefit in the last camp of the squad: being fresh, feeling fresh, and having a lot of energy.
“It’s not just a copy and a paste, I want them to feel like they all have earned their place in the squad. People want to know where they stand long-term; I’ve told all the players this is a short-term situation.”
Nevertheless, the interim manager emphasizes that Maguire still has a part to play.
Carsley added: “Harry is a player I’ve worked with in the past. He was very positive in the conversation we have.
“It was a case of talking to him about what my decision was, we have some really good centre-backs who we are keen to see play. Harry still has a really important part to play, not just in this squad but also in the campaign.”
Since then, Maguire came off the bench for United to net a late equalizer in their 3-3 draw with Porto in the Europa League.
He also started the 0-0 match against Aston Villa but was substituted at halftime because of an injury.
The exact issue is unclear, but even if he had been selected for the England squad, he might have had to pull out regardless.
After the match, Erik ten Hag was asked for an update on Maguire, but he didn’t have much information to provide.
He said: “We have to assess this. I can’t tell you now what the issue is. I know what the issue is, but [I cannot say now] how good or bad it is.
“We have to see, assess this tomorrow [Monday], and then we will bring you news.”
