Luis Enrique Would Give Half His Salary to Avoid Press

Luis Enrique, currently managing Paris Saint-Germain, has expressed a strong distaste for media obligations, stating he would give up half his salary to avoid speaking to the press. Reflecting on his career, he revealed that he could have returned to Barcelona before Xavi’s departure, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the team’s leadership. In a candid series, Enrique discussed his close call with Barcelona, emphasizing his need for assurance that Xavi wouldn’t be unfairly replaced, especially if he achieved success.

Luis Enrique Would Give Half His Salary to Skip Press

Since he began his managerial career, Luis Enrique’s relationship with the Spanish and French media has often been rocky.

In a clip from a recent behind-the-scenes documentary for the Spanish platform Movistar, the Asturian expressed his dislike for media responsibility. He mentioned he would be willing to forfeit a quarter of his salary to avoid talking to the press.

During his press conference this afternoon before PSG’s match against Rennes on Friday night, the Spaniard reiterated his feelings—though he did reassure the journalists present that he enjoyed speaking with them.

“I have a great time with you all; I get on well with the press. But if the choice was left up to me, I would have no issue with it. But I’ve never cut a press conference short; I say what I have to say, and sometimes in other languages – not very well, but I do it.”

“It was a spontaneous comment, and it’s true – if right now you were to hand me a piece of paper that said I wouldn’t have to speak to the press anymore in return for giving up 25%, or even 50%, of my salary, then I would sign it. But it wouldn’t be possible because the contracts that the clubs have signed include an obligation for managers to speak. Personally, I enjoy it, but if I could avoid it, I would – especially post-match interviews when I don’t really have the energy. I’ll say it again, though: I have a good time with you guys.”

Luis Enrique Says He Could’ve Returned to Barcelona

Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, now at Paris Saint-Germain, revealed that he could have returned to Blaugrana even before Xavi departed from his role at the club.

This revelation is part of his new series, ‘You don’t have a **** idea,’ which showcases a more personal and open side of the coach that is rarely seen in public.

The series also reveals behind-the-scenes insights into Enrique’s possible return to Barcelona and the conditions he set for it.

Luis Enrique Reflects on His Near Return to Barcelona After Managing Spain

After concluding his role as Spain’s national team manager after Qatar’s 2022 World Cup, Luis Enrique was eager to return to club management.

Barcelona faced uncertainty and numerous questions about Xavi’s leadership during that period. Then, Joan Laporta contacted Enrique, contemplating him for a potential return as the team’s manager in the summer of 2023.

In one episode of the series, Enrique discusses how near he is to returning to Barcelona. He states that he requires full confidence from Laporta regarding this decision.

Enrique sought assurance that Xavi wouldn’t be unfairly replaced, mainly if he found success. He essentially asked Laporta if he would dismiss Xavi even if he won both the league and the cup.

Enrique, as quoted by MARCA, expressed, “Are you going to fire Xavi if he wins the League and the Cup? No, right? Well, that’s it.”

Ultimately, Xavi did win the league that season, solidifying his role as Barcelona’s manager. However, the following season was disastrous, resulting in Xavi’s exit.

Looking back on the situation, Luis Enrique told his staff that if he had waited a bit longer, he might have managed Barcelona again.

“If I had waited a little, I could have been coaching Barça. Who knows,” he added.

Although Enrique’s return to Barcelona did not happen, his honest reflections emphasize how near he was to regain his position at the Catalan club during uncertainty.
