Ex-Man Utd star Angel Gomes rushed to hospital after a frightening collision in a Ligue 1 match
Former Manchester United prodigy Angel Gomes was hospitalized following a severe head injury during his match with Lille.
The 23-year-old midfielder collided mid-air with Reims defender Amadou Kone, resulting in Kone’s ejection and Gomes undergoing over 20 minutes of intensive treatment on the field.
Lille players gathered around the injured Gomes as fans from both teams at Stade Auguste Delaune chanted his name in support for 10 minutes. Gomes was then stretchered off to an awaiting ambulance.
Lille took to social media to express their thanks, stating: “Thanks to the Reims supporters who sang the name of Angel Gomes. The game has not yet resumed, but both teams are warming up again.”
When play resumed with the score still tied at 0-0, the first half was extended by an extra 34 minutes due to the delay. Lille took the lead with Bafode Diakite scoring, and he dedicated his celebration to Gomes by holding up his shirt.
Gomes’ match against Reims marked his fourth season opener in Ligue 1 with Lille, having joined the club in 2020 after leaving Old Trafford. Although academy staff had hailed him as one of Manchester United’s brightest prospects of the century, Gomes found securing a regular spot in the senior team challenging.
He was loaned out to Boavista in Portugal during his first year with Lille.
Angel Gomes has discussed the ‘difficult decision’ he faced in leaving Manchester United, sharing the emotional challenges he encountered. The young talent, who won the under-21 European Championship with England last summer and captained the U17 team to World Cup victory in 2017, spoke openly to L’Equipe in November 2023 about his departure and aspirations for a potential return.
“It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave; in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career,” Gomes shared.
He continued: “I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn’t be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [former Lille sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me.”
Gomes also shared his desire to return to Old Trafford someday, stating: “Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
Manchester United plan to intensify their efforts to sign PSG’s out-of-favor midfielder
Manchester United has a few days to finalize a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Reports suggest the Red Devils plan to intensify their efforts to secure Ugarte before the summer transfer window closes.
The Red Devils have been monitoring Ugarte for several weeks. Still, according to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, the club is reluctant to overspend on the 23-year-old midfielder.
Ugarte is eager to join Manchester United, and the club’s latest verbal offer is around €45 million. However, this amount is less than what PSG is asking for, as they are sticking to their price of at least £51.5 million.
With just a few days remaining before the summer transfer window closes, Football Insider reported on Saturday that Manchester United is stepping up its efforts to secure Ugarte in the coming days.
The report also notes that the midfielder is ready to make the move since Luis Enrique has told him he won’t be included in the plans for the upcoming season. However, the problem is the French club’s asking price, which has led the Premier League team to look at other options.
ESPN’s Julien Laurens recently mentioned that the Red Devils are debating whether to pay a high price for a player who might not be a regular starter.
“It’s not the Casimero that we saw at Madrid two or three years ago, but it’s much better than what we saw… Would you go and spend 65 million or 60 million on Ugarte when Casimero is in this form? You need more bodies, that’s for sure, especially in that defensive midfield role.”
“But spend all that money for somebody who might not be a starter in your team, that’s where I think that’s where Ugarte to United possibility is right now.”
