PSG are looking to end Gabriel Moscardo’s loan at Reims early, while former sporting director Leonardo revealed he wanted to sell Kylian Mbappé in 2021. Both developments highlight the club’s ongoing strategic shifts, with Moscardo’s loan not yielding expected results and Mbappé’s departure still a topic of internal debate.
PSG Aim to End Gabriel Moscardo’s Loan at Reims Early
Gabriel Moscardo, 19, joined Paris Saint-Germain from Corinthians in January but didn’t stay long at Le Campus, as he was quickly loaned out.
With his route to the first team at PSG blocked, Moscardo was sent on loan to Stade de Reims late in the summer transfer window. However, the move has not proven beneficial for any side so far. Since joining Luka Elsner’s team, the Brazil U23 international has yet to make an appearance on the pitch.
Understandably, PSG is unhappy with the situation, and it’s no surprise that they are seeking to end the loan early, according to L’Équipe. The Ligue 1 champions are looking to recall Moscardo before finding him a new loan destination, as his chances of featuring in the first team at the Parc des Princes remain limited.
Former PSG Sporting Director Aimed to Sell Kylian Mbappé in 2021
Kylian Mbappé’s long-anticipated transfer to Real Madrid finally materialized this summer, but it could have occurred earlier if PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo, had his way.
When faced with the choice to either extend his contract or leave on a free transfer to join Real Madrid in 2022, Mbappé chose to stay, signing a two-year extension with the option for a third year. This decision came at the same time as Leonardo’s departure as PSG’s sporting director.
In an interview with Le Figaro, Leonardo revealed that he was opposed to Mbappé’s contract renewal. “I was against it. Always. From the start,” he explained.
The former PSG sporting director also believes the club should have sold Mbappé to Real Madrid at the end of the 2020/21 season, allowing them to secure a transfer fee for the French captain. “I think he should have even been sold at the end of the 2020/21 season when Real Madrid made an offer, and he had just a year left on his contract,” said Leonardo.
The former sporting director then criticized his old club for mishandling the Mbappé situation and allowing him to overshadow the team. “What big institution collapsed when it lost a player? None. An element cannot be bigger than a club,” he told Le Figaro.
Kylian Mbappé’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain this summer marked the end of a tumultuous chapter for both the player and the club. After seven years at PSG, the French forward left under acrimonious circumstances, with the two parties embroiled in a bitter wage dispute. His exit followed months of tension, with Mbappé’s future at the club in constant doubt. Despite his importance to the team, the saga surrounding his contract overshadowed much of PSG’s focus, culminating in his move to Real Madrid. Although his departure left a significant void, the club was left to recalibrate without their star player.
In terms of results, PSG is currently at top Ligue 1, but it has faced challenges in Europe. The club has struggled in the UEFA Champions League, registering only one win so far in this season’s competition, a poor return for a side with ambitions to go deep in the tournament. Nonetheless, manager Luis Enrique remains optimistic. He insists that his squad is stronger this season compared to the previous one, despite Mbappé’s absence. Enrique’s belief is rooted in the club’s improved collective play, with a greater emphasis on team dynamics rather than relying on individual brilliance. While Mbappé’s departure has undoubtedly changed the makeup of the team, PSG hopes that Enrique’s unity and tactical cohesion can help them overcome the challenges they now face in both domestic and European competitions.
