Mohamed Salah shared his regret over a key moment in Liverpool’s Champions League history while also addressing doubts about his future at the club. As Liverpool prepares for a crucial clash with Real Madrid, the Spanish giants are facing a defensive crisis and have made a key decision regarding a club legend’s potential return. The upcoming match is set to be pivotal for both teams as they navigate ongoing challenges.
Salah Reveals Liverpool Regret, Vows Future Amid Doubts
Mohamed Salah has admitted to still feeling regret over a key Champions League moment in his Liverpool career. The Egyptian forward has played in three Champions League finals with the Reds, scoring in their 2019 victory against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.
However, Salah was famously forced off the field in tears due to injury during the first half of their 2018 final defeat to Real Madrid and was unable to score against goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois when the two teams met again four years later.
Salah holds the record as Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in both Europe and the Champions League, with 43 of his 48 goals for the club coming in UEFA’s premier competition.
He has continued his strong form this season, registering one goal and four assists in Liverpool’s four Champions League matches so far, helping Arne Slot’s side maintain a perfect record and top the table at the halfway point. With his contract at Anfield expiring next summer, Salah is keenly aware that this may be his final season with the Reds.
He will surely be eager to embark on another deep Champions League run. In the second episode of The Reds Roundtable, while reminiscing about Liverpool’s 2019 victory with teammates Alisson Becker and Andy Robertson, Salah admitted feeling regret over his opening penalty against Spurs, revealing that he changed his mind during his run-up.
“I changed my mind where to put the ball when I was running,” he elaborated. “I practiced the whole week on the other side. Then I just took the run like this, and when I hit the ball, I just changed my mind, and I felt bad.
“I felt really bad after that, even until now. Every time I see it, I say, ‘Why did I change my mind?’ Because sometimes when you take a decision and you practice very well, and you miss, you don’t feel bad about it. I did my everything and had bad luck. But when you change your mind in the Champions League final, it was too much pressure, to be fair.”
Salah also shared his thoughts with Alisson and Robertson about his time at Liverpool, saying he will always cherish the special moments in a red shirt. He added, “What I value most is the time I spend every morning with the guys, sharing incredible moments, especially with us three, plus Virgil [van Dijk] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold], the senior group.”
“When Bobby [Firmino] left, for example, you realize everybody will leave one day, so I don’t take that for granted. When I go [to the training ground], I always try to have a laugh with them and spend good time together. In my head, I always remember the good things we had together.”
Real Madrid Makes Key Decision on Legend Before Liverpool Clash
Real Madrid has reportedly rejected the chance to re-sign a club legend ahead of their Champions League clash with Liverpool. The club is facing a defensive injury crisis, with David Alaba out for nearly a year, Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao both sidelined with ACL injuries and Lucas Vazquez out for a month with a thigh issue.
Real Madrid sit second in La Liga, six points behind Barcelona, and have earned just six points from their first four Champions League games. The reigning European champions, who won their 15th title last season, are currently 18th in the group and may face a play-off to reach the last 16.
Madrid will face Liverpool at Anfield on November 27, potentially lacking defensive options. There were talks of a Sergio Ramos return. The former Madrid captain, who won five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues, has been without a club since leaving Sevilla last season.
