Tottenham is set to reject a permanent deal for Timo Werner despite the striker’s potential to help the team. Meanwhile, Antonio Conte defends his time at Spurs, claiming he performed well despite the challenges, including the club’s failure to reach the Champions League during his tenure.
Tottenham to Reject Permanent Deal for Champions League Winner
The striker is currently on loan to North London from RB Leipzig, with an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
For just £8.5m euros, they could secure the Champions League winner’s services for as long as they want. However, sources from Give Me Sport suggest the club is rejecting this offer.
Tottenham Will Not Secure Timo Werner Permanently
It’s thought that the German will feature on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup against Man City, and if he can regain his scoring form, which has been missing in recent years, there’s a small chance Postecoglou could change his stance.
Recent pundits have suggested dropping Werner due to his performance level, and the North London club may be open to letting him go in January.
It’s a significant decline for the 28-year-old, who lifted the Champions League with Chelsea only three years ago.
In 11 matches this season, he has yet to score and has only one assist (transfermarkt). With just four goals since the start of 2023/24, he doesn’t provide the attacking threat Tottenham needs. Therefore, sending Werner back to Leipzig seems like the right call for Postecoglou.
He will certainly need to be replaced in the squad, but it’s unclear at this stage where Spurs might focus their search.
For now, the North London club should focus on advancing as far as possible in the cup competitions and climbing as high as they can in the Premier League.
If that happens, they will at least become more appealing to players.
Conte: I Did Well at Tottenham Despite Challenges
On Tuesday, the Serie A team increased their lead at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over AC Milan at the San Siro.
Following the match, the manager spoke with DAZN in Italy about his time at Tottenham, with his remarks shared by Tutto Napoli.
Conte earned his first major trophies as a manager with Juventus. He later secured silverware with Chelsea and Inter Milan but didn’t claim any titles at Spurs.
Tottenham hired Conte as their manager in November 2021, and he remained in charge until March 2023. Under his leadership, the north London club ended the 2021–2022 season in fourth place in the standings.
Since then, Spurs have not returned to the Champions League, and the former Chelsea manager has cited this as an example of why he did ‘very well’ at Tottenham.
DAZN highlights to Conte that he won with his previous clubs, unlike Tottenham, who are still ‘struggling.’
Responding to that, he said: “Everyone has to understand where he’s going… I understand that there is always great expectation, but if you go to a place where there is difficulty anyway.
“I think at Tottenham I didn’t do well, but I did very well; from ninth place, we went to the Champions League.”
“It’s two years since I left, and they still don’t get into the Champions League, when I left by personal choice, I left them in the Champions League, and they finished eighth. I think I made a difference there too.
“If they ask me for big miracles… I can certainly give an acceleration and lead the team to do the maximum, but the maximum doesn’t always mean winning.”
Ange Postecoglou was Conte’s permanent replacement at Tottenham. The team finished fifth last season and is currently in eighth place.
